DOPE

A word is a collection of shapes that shapes the space and materials around us. Words also shape how we understand the world because they allow us to assign meaning to things. However, this shaping is not permanent. Essentially, words are changing shapes that shape our surroundings and are also shaped by us as we reconstruct them and change the way we use them. To communicate these ideas, I re-purposed broken pieces of glass, glued them onto these wooden letters, and filmed people pouring different substances on them. Each of these substances represents the meaning of the word dope at a particular time. Hence, this video acts a visual etymology of the word dope. To accompany the video, I wrote, designed, and bound a catalogue to explain the transformation of the word dope and describe the process of creating the video.
