Uncloaked

This project was about drawing comparisons and contrasts from two photographs that match in either composition, subject, or genre. I selected these images – Georgia O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz (c. 1920-1922) and Conversation by Aida Muluneh (2016) – because I found the similarity in composition very striking, especially when considering the difference contexts in which these works emerged. After researching the images and doing visual exercises, which I documented in this process book, I selected a typeface for each photograph that I thought reflects the essence of the image. I then created two typographic translations for each, one aesthetic and one discursive. The aesthetic ones emphasize purely what is seen in the images, while the discursive ones speak to the research and emphasize what can be inferred. To finish my investigation, I took a third photograph which I felt matched the spirit of this pairing to create a series.
